Philanthropy

“To those whom my life may touch in slight measure, may I give graciously of what is mine.”

As Delta Zeta women we are truly devoted to positively impacting the world around us through service. Each year, the women of our chapter dedicate nearly 4,000 hours to volunteering and donate $7,500 to charitable causes. During the school year we host two large philanthropy events raising over $30,000 for Starkey Hearing Foundation.

We hope you enjoy learning more about our philanthropy! For any questions regarding service and philanthropy feel free to reach out to Hunter Stringfellow, our Vice President of Philanthropy, at stringfh@mail.gvsu.edu

Local Philanthropies

Locally, the Xi Psi chapter of Delta Zeta supports Gildas Club and the YWCA of Grand Rapids. Every semester the women of the Xi Psi chapter have a Service Day where every member volunteers to different places in the local Grand Rapids community.

The ladies of Xi Psi are actively involved in Sheldon Meadows Retirement Home where we visit and facilitate fun activities.

Xi Psi also takes part in Relay For Life, an annual event held at GVSU and other college campuses around the nation to raise money for the American Cancer Society while celebrating those who have survived cancer.

National Philanthropies

Delta Zeta knows the power of women to effect positive change, and has proven it from our earliest volunteer work during World War I to the efforts given today to foster speech and hearing programs and support The Painted Turtle Camp. Delta Zeta members take change into their own hands by volunteering wherever they see a need.

Below you will find the foundations that Delta Zeta is partnered with and nationally supports:

In 1954, Speech and Hearing became Delta Zeta’s philanthropic focus, partnering with Gallaudet University, the world’s only university making undergraduate programs accessible to the deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing students. At Gallaudet University, Delta Zeta endowed the Delta Zeta Scholarship Fund and the Fine Arts Endowment Fund. There is also a collegiate Delta Zeta chapter at the university!

Later, in 2006, Delta Zeta voted to make Starkey Hearing Foundation another philanthropic partner to further spread the gift of hearing. Starkey Hearing Foundation has provided hearing devices, aftercare services, and various other resources to those who are deaf or hard of hearing in over 100 countries.  In 2015, Delta Zeta pledged to raise $5 million in five years for Starkey Hearing Foundation and, as of 2019, Delta Zeta has raised $3.3 million nationally.

Additionally, The Painted Turtle Camp, a medical specialty camp for children and their families with chronic and life-threatening illnesses, is Delta Zeta’s National Service Project. With the Sorority’s national commitment to support the camp through donations the Painted Turtle supports children’s medical needs, inspires them to reach beyond their illnesses, and provides care, education, and respite for their families. There is no billing department, and all campers and families attend free of charge.
